NHL Trade Alert: Blackhawks Acquire Strome and Perlini for Schmaltz

Once again the Chicago Blackhawks and Arizona Coyotes were dance partners as the two teams were involved in a trade. The Chicago Blackhawks acquired the number three overall selection from the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini from Arizona for Nick Schmaltz.

If you look at the trade by the numbers, all three players were first round draft picks. As noted earlier, Strome was the third overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, where Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel went one-two respectively. Brendan Perlini was the 12th overall pick by the Coyotes in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Nick Schmaltz was selected 20th overall by Chicago that same year. Also, second Strome brother traded in past 10 days after Ryan was sent to New York from Edmonton.

Strome has never panned out in Arizona.  In 47 NHL games, Strome has scored just seven goals. After having a monster year in the AHL during the 2017-18 season, Strome made the team out of training camp. While he is great in the faceoff circle, he has only three goals on the season.

Strome has never been comfortable playing in a Coyotes uniform. Chicago hopes Strome will get a spark playing with former OHL teammate Alex DeBrincat. Perlini, 22, has two goals and four assists in 22 games this season. He set career highs with 17 goals and 13 assists in 74 games last season.

Schmaltz is also off to a slow start with two goals and nine assists in 23 games, but he is just 22 years old and coming off a breakout season. Stan Bowman’s history has shown he will trade players like this.

However, one thing is clear, all these players were in need of a fresh start. As a matter of fact, the previous two trades this season, you could say the same thing about those players as well. As you can see in Strome’s play his confidence is not where it needs to be. Not to mention the fact the players selected after Strome in the 2015 NHL Draft are playing so well. Something like that will hurt any players confidence.

While Arizona is still a year or two away from making the playoffs, Chicago, on the other hand, is looking to get back to the playoffs. For the first time in a decade, Chicago missed the playoffs last season. After a disappointing start to the season, Chicago then fired Joel Quenneville.

Over the years, the Blackhawks and Coyotes have been frequent trade partners. Over this past summer, Chicago dealt forward Vinnie Hinostroza and defenceman Jordan Oesterle to Arizona as part of a multiplayer deal that shifted Marian Hossa’s contract to the Coyotes’ salary cap. Not to mention the pre-draft trade in the summer of 2017 that sent Niklas Hjalmarsson to Arizona.
